Koreatown’s beloved Cassell’s Hamburgers is expanding its operations to Downtown LA with a forthcoming second outpost housed in the former Pellicola Pizzeria space on 8th Street. First reported by Eater LA, the menu will feature all of the classics from the original restaurant (that includes the patty melt, Dave) with the addition of more deli sandwiches to round out its offerings. Workers are already in place to clean out what remains of Pellicola with the expectation of Cassell’s making its Downtown LA debut by summer.
First established in 1948 on 6th Street in Koreatown, Cassell’s went dormant in 2012 before being brought back to life three years later at the Hotel Normandie by former Short Order chef Christian Page. Page and his team paid homage to Cassell’s original owner, Al Cassell, in the construction and re-creation of the restaurant while still infusing a much needed modernization to the concept. The addition of the Downtown LA franchise marks a year of expansion for Cassell’s as there are plans in place for a third restaurant to open at LAX in the near future.
