Century-old Seafood Companies Aim To Revitalize Downtown LA’s Industrial District

A collection of nearly a dozen seafood wholesalers have banded together to help restore the greater Industrial District of Downtown LA through a self-funded beautification program. Located due south of Little Tokyo and immediately west of the Arts District, the neighborhood will be called “The North Sea” in homage to its past and include new murals, enhanced landscaping, and sculptures in an effort to drive a sense of community and pride in a part of DTLA rich with history. The 1920s saw the height of the neighborhood with immigrant families running successful seafood companies in the area which led to the North Sea nickname before the late 1970s gave way to urban decay and disrupted what was once an inviting place. With the backing of prominent seafood companies including Los Angeles Fish Company, Wild Fish, and Kansas Marine, among others, the revitalization to the area should attract increased attention to locales offering some of the freshest fish in town.
